The U.S. space agency is now based on the radio to transmit information across the solar system and beyond, which not only uses lots of energy but it is a slow transfer rate. The current connection with Mars, for example, can send data at speeds of only about 6 Mbps. The same as the average broadband connection in the UK, and you do not have to share with an entire planet

This is not just for future use on Mars, is an immediate need, as the current connection is too slow for satellites in orbit there. The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter sends periodic high-resolution images of the Martian surface. In about 2 gigabytes each, even after compression of images will take about 90 minutes to reach Earth. With a new Lasercom 100 Mbps, which could be done in five minutes.
