Peers jailed over expenses can return to Lords next spring

Decision

Lord Taylor of Warwick and Lord Hanningfield, say the reformers, highlights the need for rules to disqualify themselves members

two Conservative colleagues jailed for abusing his parliamentary expenses will be free to return to the House of Lords in the spring, prompting criticism from reformers.

Lord Taylor of Warwick and Lord Hanningfield were published in September after serving a quarter of its terms. House of Lords and the privileges of the Ethics Committee recommended that Taylor should be suspended from the House until next May to April Hanningfield.

Lord Oakeshott, the Liberal Democrat peer who has campaigned for reform of the second chamber, said: "This farce of a new emphasis on the need to be able to permanently disqualify persons who are convicted of a crime. The proposed reform of the Lords said the boy convicted criminal should be disqualified as members. would be unthinkable to have a partner in order to vote in laws while serving a prison sentence. "

At the time Taylor said he was "remorseful", but uses what had happened to help others in the future. He said: "I regret that my actions led to the house into disrepute and for that I apologize."

A report by David Beamish, Clerk of Parliament, notes that Taylor has not yet repaid 13,033.90 due to the authorities of the House. He wrote to Taylor on Sept. 14 asked to confirm "no later than October 3, 2011" willingness to pay that amount. "I have not received an answer," he said.

Hanningfield, 70, was sentenced to nine months in July, after falsely claiming £ 13.379 in parliamentary expenses for the night in London where he was not in the capital, including an occasion in which he was on board a flight to India.
's investigation found that the Commissioner wrongly claimed £ 30,254.50. So far it has paid £ 1,800, but he said the ethics committee that he intended to pay the full amount and would not return home until he has.
