Spain prime minister calls early election for 20 November

Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has been under way since the March elections as Spain struggles with high unemployment

Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero on Tuesday called early elections for November 20, as the country is struggling to cope with rising bond yields and high unemployment.

Zapatero said he had decided to advance the March elections for greater "political and economic security" in a country that many consider a key to the future of the area euro. "I want a new government to take control of the economy from 1 January next year," said Zapatero. "It is advisable to hold elections this fall so a new government can support economy in 2012, fresh voice. "

Zapatero has imposed austerity and reforms last year as markets sovereign debt threatened to put his country in a similar situation in Portugal, Greece and Ireland - who all need bailouts. He said that major reforms will be completed in September and other measures to reduce the deficit come next month.
