Time for a revolution in the way we deal with rape | Holly Dustin
prejudicial attitudes to rape to infect our society. The possibilities of real change must not be wasted
is just over two weeks since the higher tax in London, Alison Saunders, gave a chill warning that "almost demonization" of women by the media was having a negative impact in the British justice system and resulting in acquittals in rape cases. This evidence echoes given by the violence against women in search of the media report inaccurate and harmful Leveson of rape sends a strong and consistent justice system - and the public - usually women "mourn the violation, "the victims of rape is not considered, and that potential perpetrators that they get away
two cases scheduled for this week dark confirmation of these concerns. In a trial in Ireland of the author, who said she had been raped and imprisoned for three men who had to be placed directly in front of them to identify, by Mr Justice Paul Carney - a test who left his "visibily terror", according to press reports. The next day, when she appeared in court after an apparent attempted suicide, he was imprisoned. And in the Court of Appeal in London, a woman is to appeal against his conviction for obstruction of justice. His crime? Falsely retract an allegation of repeated rape by her husband. To be clear, it was agreed that their initial allegations of systematic sexual violence was real and that its removal was false. Hard to believe that the case is not a history book on medieval justice, sitting next fables about the actions and the witch ducking.
But perhaps these cases are not so extraordinary. Every part of our society seems to be infected with prejudicial attitudes to rape, from the Attorney General's comments about rape last year, Facebook pages that promote sexual violence, the occasional use of rape jokes by best comedians and the outpouring of misogyny in the male students of the university sites. No wonder that polls consistently show that about one third of people in the UK believe that if a woman is raped then it must be at least partially responsible if they do not behave like a "perfect" victim, either so it has been used or had been drinking. And of course, the authors tend to focus on women who drank, so that the attitudes of society and strengthen the conspiracy with the author. Recent research by Middlesex University found that boys and convicted rapists magazines use the same kind of language when talking about women.
- rape victims, of course, you know, so that up to 90% did not report the most serious crimes. End violence against women voting has found that schools in the UK, sexual harassment is a routine and indisputable and that nearly a third of girls experiencing unwanted sexual contact. Apparently, girls and children grow up in a culture of non-respect for women and girls, where the abuse is considered acceptable. So what can you do? We must begin the task of changing attitudes towards rape and other forms of violence against women. This means working with young people in schools to understand what the law relationships are healthy and friendly. This means that continuing education for professionals, including teachers, social workers and criminal justice. This means that long-term campaigns to raise public awareness locally and nationally, as the teenager's recent Home Office campaign in an abusive relationship or to eliminate violence against women WeAreMan video - designed for young men and changing away from the focus on women's behavior
