Lufthansa on Friday became the first airline to run a regular commercial flight powered partly with biofuels.
Airlines
made numerous demonstration flights of biofuels, but Lufthansa LH013 from 11:15 am to flight Frankfurt Hamburg enter into passenger service in the first run on a blend of biofuel and conventional fuel.
The company will use the new fuel mixture for six months in eight of its 28 daily flights to 50 min between the two German cities - a distance of 244 miles each way. The German airline said the flights will save 1,200 tonnes of CO 1500
Biofuelscould help airlines to reduce carbon emissions. But critics say that biofuels take up land for growing food and rising prices. Worse, if they promote deforestation, which may actually increase emissions.
An engine for the Airbus A321 with 200 seats will be fed with a 50-50 mixture of kerosene-based biofuels and conventional, the other engine to run on kerosene alone. This will allow Lufthansa to compare the engine results in exactly the same conditions. It was necessary to modify one of the engines.
