Who's pulling the strings in Russia's ballet revolution?
A banana billionaire, "a couple of deserters from the Bolshoi, a Spanish leader and a powerful agent of all the protagonists of this power struggle
On December 15, during a national television show called "Meet Mr. Putin," Russian Prime Minister went Valery Gergiev, Mariinsky Theater director general in St. Petersburg. "You should stop poaching dancers from the Bolshoi," Putin said with an icy smile. Knowing that he had done such a thing Mariinsky, Valery Gergiev avoided. Words of Vladimir Putin, he said, should be directed to " a colleague who is present here. " Everyone knew who he was referring Gergiev. A month earlier, Vladimir Kekhman, executive director of Mikhailovsky Theatre, had persuaded the brightest stars of the Bolshoi Ballet, Natalia Osipova and Ivan Vasiliev to join his company in St. Petersburg.
The ballet world was stunned. The Mikhailovsky is half the size of the Bolshoi, and has always languished in the shadow of the oldest and most famous of St. Petersburg, Mariinsky Ballet. In the world ranking, Osipova and Vasiliev dance, as the transfer of a business has been unprecedented and has been a great success for the Mikhailovsky.
GeneralBolshoi, Anatoly Iksanov, Kekhman protest in the press, describes the departure of dancers as an "attack", but gently diverted Kekhman Iksanov words. He offered the dancers a "market price", he said, and thrown into an apartment in Moscow, where 25 years and 22 years Osipova, Vasiliev, a couple off stage, still alive. The dancers, he added, had made the decision in the interest of "creative development". was one. Transfer the seed, but in his play surface energy complex being played for them in discussion, we must go back to 2007 when the theater was in disrepair and the Mikhailovsky ballet company struggling to attract little attention . Enter Kekhman after 39 years, an importer of fruit multi-millionaire who is described with the grandiloquence of Freud as "the emperor banana." Pour $ 40 million of his own money into the State Theatre, convinced Kekhman authorities who appointed CEO of Mikhailovsky. His discovery of the ballet, he says, was "an adult love, but love that I'm sure." hire a group of dancers, and the appointment of the former star of the Mariinsky Farukh Ruzimatov artistic director, Kekhman mount an international tour of a new version

. Created by George Kovtun, whose only other credit choreography was a black version of the ballet Rasputin , production was perhaps a little money on the side - the gladiators appeared to the inhabitants of a leather bar, mostly prostitutes and women played the first featuring live tigers - but got the ballet world sit up and take notein 2009, replaced by Mikhail Messerer Ruzimatov Kekhman. A former dancer with the Bolshoi, and a member of one of the most prominent dynasties in the Russian ballet, Messerer had defected to the West in 1980 and becoming a teacher and repeater
. His appointment marks a turning point for the Mikhailovsky. RodeSwan Lake
for the company, not the Petipa-Ivanov version danced the Mariinsky, but conventional an interesting production of the early 20 Bolshoi choreographer Alexander Gorsky. At the same time, boostedLaurencia
, a dramatic story ballet set in Spain. With a repertoire of more classic, and a group led by two remarkable dancers, Irina Perren and Borchenko Ekaterina, the Mikhailovsky began to gain an international reputation. It Kekhman, observers wondered, almost mythical figure, a purely disinterested patron of art? Or was he playing a longer game? I was looking at the Bolshoi Iksanov position? Have the Ministry of Culture of honor? looking for a company that could lead to the Mikhailovsky U. S., Kekhman went to the Manhattan office of Sergei Danilian. Danilian is both a businessman, a packer ballet star, and an agent. One of his clients was the choreographer Nacho Duato, which since 1990 had been director of the National Dance Company of Spain. In July 2010, Kekhman stunned the world of ballet, to announce that from January next year, Mikhailovsky Ballet lead Duato as Artistic Director.- The decision was particularly surprising, since the dancers are trained and Mikhailovsky Ballet is a contemporary choreographer Nacho Duato. "Everyone thought, 'Are you crazy? Are you crazy?'" Said Nacho Duato at a time. "But if you're not crazy, not to proceed."
- Many believed the decision was a very bad deal Messer, who had done more than anyone to establish their artistic credentials of the company and now apparently going to have to play a secondary role. The Spanish choreographer has created four works for the company in the first half of 2011 and the dancers did their best to fit your style. "They're a little afraid of me now," said Duato. "Because they are not used for the modern work - and do not interact much with a choreographer of life since, well, ever"
without words and
Duende received critical approval. As the company added Duato modern repertoire, and their trial took more time, Messerer makes every effort to ensure that the dancers clinging to conventional techniques, a task which, he says, "is not always easy. "It was essential, however, because by then and Danilian Kekhman Duato was announced that the first of a new version of
