Eurozone crisis live: Greece talks grind on as 'deadline' passes
. The Greek politicians locked in talks with an eye on the upcoming elections
. The credibility of euro area banks questioned plans to conduct capitaltalks about the delays in Athensdebt continues to affect the currency markets, as traders fear that the ghost of a chaotic default and contagion. Now 0.6% to Euro 1.3064 U.S. dollars.
After gaining strength in recent days as optimism about an agreement, the euro is now falling.
24:55:
a meeting between Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos and leaders of the coalition parties is likely to lead to upward earlier this afternoon, says Helena Smith in Athens.
officials are confirming that there is no consensus among party leaders politicial of Greece to accept the conditions and arrangements for the next rescue program in Athens. "They accepted the basic principles ... there are outstanding issues and that will take you as far as possible, but will not press the nuclear button," said one well-placed source. "The meeting should take place around 18 o'clock, just before or soon after, and we hope it willl be completed in the same.""The troika has given," said another official. "The biggest obstacle now is the minimum wage. What can be done in Greece with ? 550 [a month]? Is very difficult for anyone to accept the reduction of these levels, but it is my feeling this will be resolved as well. We are approaching an agreement. "
negotiations between representatives of the troika and the Greek Evangelos Venizelos, Minister of Finance is required to discuss "technical" issues.
24:20:. Nicolas Sarkozy and Angela Merkel also got into the situation at a joint press conference in Paris this afternoon
Sarkozy said - with a touch of optimism - that the agreement on the second rescue of Greece "never been closer." The French president also urged political leaders of Greece to fulfill their commitments.
As Sarkozy said:
Europe is a place where everyone has rights and duties. Time is running out, it must be concluded. You must be signed.
Chancellor Angela Merkel said at the press conference it was important to see "some progress" in the "coming days", and insisted that Greece has to decide to stay in the euro area . She said:
want Greece to stay in the euro area. Obviously, this is the opinion of both. But I tell you - there may be no new programs in Greece if the agreement is not reached with the Troika of the
Anyone who has the responsibility of Greece should know -. Do not deviate from this position
And without a program to help new default address Greece next month.
24:06:.
The European Commission has attacked Greece for failure to reach agreement, and insisted that the time is up
EC spokesman Amadeu Altafaj told reporters in Brussels that "the ball was in the courtyard of the Greek authorities," insisting that he must now decide whether to accept the Under the second bailout proposal.
Altafaj said:
We went beyond the time already.
Altafaj said the finance ministers will meet once Greece has said it will make their commitments.
In other words - do not wait for us to hold our next meeting. We are waiting for you.
11:48:
frustrations in the loss of time-that-was-no more cold austerity measures in Greece are brilliantly articulated by Louise Cooper BGC Partners , which gives us a lesson in etymology. "Deadline" reminds us, was originally a term for a civil war that marked the boundary beyond which a prisoner could not go without being shot.
Again, a euro crisis deadline has not proven its definition might suggest - I think the Oxford Dictionary of English need to update the meaning of the date boundary to include a version of the euro area - likely to miss more optimistic than the scheduled period, rather than a true reflection of the days and weeks required to get something achieved.
We got around a good deal on the Greek terms, in recent days (see below). Meanwhile, heavy vehicles have accumulated in the pressure zone euros. Eurogroup President Jean-Claude Juncker, Luxembourg, said: "If we were to check that everything went wrong in Greece, then there would be no new program, then it would mean that in March it would had to declare bankruptcy. "The last track when you can get more information came from a Greek MP, a member of the ruling PASOK, who told Bloomberg TV that the agreement between the politicians of the coalition must be reached tomorrow afternoon. Do you hold your breath on that promise? Maybe not.
11:46: factory orders in Germany for December rose 1.7% from the previous month, well above expectations and increase the impression that the largest economy in the euro area continues to drive forward, driven by additional demand.
- 11:10:
- echo a historical curiosity: Today is the anniversary of the coronation of Otto in 1832, the king of Greece, an occasion that gave birth state (highly leveraged) modern - although under the protection of the United Kingdom, France and Russia. FT Alphaville points as Otto was very Bavarian. In fact, he was the son of King Louis I. His reign saw a massive increase in taxes and sparked widespread discontent - even an attempted murder of his wife. He was finally overthrown in a coup and withdrew to Bavaria in 1862. A lesson for our time?
10:33:
If the vote for Scottish independence, which could emerge with something less than a AAA credit rating, according to a misdemeanor in the FT this morning. Taking informal polls of the three major rating agencies - Standard & Poor's Moody's and Fitch - The report suggests that Scotland could scrape an investment grade rating, but some shortcuts triple SNP in the UK A. describes the reports "inaccurate".
