Fighting for jobs and health care - and against second-home council tax perks

In the last of this series of personal reflections of the members of the North in 2011, the Liberal Democratic President

This past year has been an incredible roller coaster - in just 12 months old dictatorships were overthrown and replaced by a new era of democracy in North Africa, the potential drop in Rupert Murdoch, the media through the Empire phone hacking scandal and a summer that saw riots in some of the largest cities in the UK.

The BBC has called 2011 "The year I spent a lot", which has a catchy ring to ... but of course you're right! In Cumbria, we have had ups and downs also own. One of the highlights of my year was the opening of our new chemotherapy unit at Westmorland General Hospital in Kendal. We campaigned for years to provide cancer services at the hospital and so it's a great victory for us as a community. It was proof that the community work hard together can make a tangible difference in the lives of local people.

In terms of government have been very uneven - the first increase in the tax threshold more down more than 800,000 people from all taxes, the battle to avoid the case of the 50p tax rate and the ongoing efforts to transform health and social reform project for the future of our NHS and undo some of the privatization that occurs during the last administration. There was a moment of boredom and recent events in Europe, which have divided the country into two, this means that next year is likely to be as memorable as the struggle to rebuild our relations with Europe and ensuring that the return to table discussions to ensure that decisions taken in the best interest of Great Britain.

Thus, in the hope that they enjoyed a seasonal Christmas greetings and all the best for 2012.
