Ed Miliband's 'quiet crisis' is down to capitalism | David Harvie and Keir Milburn
financial crisis, climate change, the events of spring Arabic and Greek taught us one thing that markets do not work
"A silent crisis" sounds like the title of a novel by John Le Carré. At least we can have an idea of ??the square of the logic of capital murder and complicity of the British ruling class.
In fact, this is Ed Miliband, to discuss the impact of the cost of food, energy and transport, in a time of layoffs and wage a hurry, not to mention the cuts Government public services. "The result is a silent crisis that takes place every day in kitchens and living rooms in every city, village and city up and down the country."
WhatMiliband talking about a crisis of social reproduction - that is, a break in the capacity of individuals, families and communities (eg, society) to maintain, educate and care for each other, and for development.
In many ways, the Labour leader is correct. After more than three decades of neoliberal policies - privatization, commodification and "new enclosures" - our individual and collective ability to access social wealth is so closely linked with the market and the capitalist wage, which explains the crisis for many we , we reproduce the failure as human beings in the 21st century. When the markets crash, is that human beings are burned. (In fact, as a trader Rastani Alessio says bluntly, cumbersome markets and ways of life is just an opportunity for profit.)
- is also right when he said that in the UK, particularly the experience of this crisis on an individual basis, and were rather quiet. For Miliband, it's not a problem. This means that the only way to express through the ballot box with a cross next to the name of his party. And when things are a little noisy, since June 30 two-day public sector strike or riots of August, David Miliband is secure in his conviction.
- silent face of this crisis, David Miliband spoke of "tearing the rule book" while his shadow Foreign Secretary, Douglas Alexander suggested: "There are times in politics when the right direction once it has finished game. The deteriorating economic situation here in Britain, Europe and the world means that the time is. "Exactly! But despite his bravery, leadership Labour is so unimaginative as the rest of the political class. Alexander added that this work has to do is "to explain what they did right and wrong before the fall, how we get the growth of the economy, and so make up the shortfall, and how we will deal with social justice, less money. " Economy
What is even more interesting about the situation in Greece is the way people try to separate themselves from their own social reproduction of capital. This is partly motivated by the need, of course, but it paves the way for social experiences that are much more significant that speaks of a "Great Society". The typical example is the migration to rural areas as people leave the cities to engage in agriculture. As we know by the international peasant movement Via Campesina, food sovereignty is at the heart of the development of alternatives to neoliberal policies that have impoverished many, and can also play an important role in the fight against climate change. Far from being "a sure sign of social decline," as described by the Greek Marxist political economist Costa Lapavitsas in these pages last week, this "return to agriculture" can be understood as a movement full of potential.
If the financial crisis has taught us anything, it is that markets do not work. If the global temperature rising - and other indicators potentially catastrophic climate change - have taught us anything, it is that markets do not work. If the Arab spring and the movements of a real democracy in Greece, Spain, and even on Wall Street have taught us anything, it is that markets do not work. In the midst of this silent crisis, we must begin to imagine a future for humanity cut off from capital markets and wage labor.
