An NGO fit for the future

How NGOs work best in an unstable world of scarce resources? Peace Brigades International is one to watch

In a recent interview for a radio show, I asked what he thought about the future of international NGOs should look like. NGOs are as diverse in objectives and strategy, the question is a bit large to respond appropriately, but, on reflection, the type of NGOs like to join me in 10 years are a bit like the Peace Brigades International ( GDP), the conference on the environment and the rights of the land was held Monday in London.

most people think of international non-governmental organizations as essentially driven to spend money from the rich north to the poor in the south. After all, marketing campaigns generally have poor seeking short of money, and simply put a coin in a collection tin, or set up a direct debit when inadvertently "plot" (charity assaulted) on Street means that the important part of the equation is money.

But when I found a country office of the NGO, I have lost count of the times in which our partners in the country, he said, "Not that I ' not like money, of course we do. But more important is its accompanying physical and political. "

course, this was a country that is relatively well (Colombia), compared with most developing countries, and there is the conflict that poverty is a major political issue. But that, I think, is the point. Assuming (and hoping) that the world's poor countries are relatively well economically, as they have done over the last ten years, gradually becoming less of a problem related to the absolute lack of money. Because while we can expect traditional development indicators (such as access to health and basic education) to further improve, we can not be said of the conflict.

In his latest book, Steven Pinker argues that there are strong reasons to believe that we live in a quieter time than ever. But he warns that the clouds on the horizon to do with the scarcity of resources could undermine this apparent progress. I agree. The future challenge for international NGOs to identify new threats to the interests of the poor and marginalized from a world ever more unequal, unstable and resources scarce.
