Isis laboratory funding shortfall 'damaging UK's research standing'
Scientists say that the lack of 3 million pounds per year for operating expenses £ 400m midfielder is underutilized
hundreds of scientific experiments are being lost by UK universities as there is little money to run one of the country's research centers, the most important.
Jobs in high priority areas of green energy and design of drugs to biotechnology and microelectronics has been disrupted, threatening the basis of UK research and international reputation, said scientists.
The government spent 400 million pounds in the construction of the neutron source ISIS, a world-class laboratory in Buenos Aires, but the machine is used mostly by the lack of 3 million pounds a year for electricity and operating costs. The laboratory was forced to torpor part-time as the government reduced the budget for scientific research and donors allocated very little money to pay the operating costs of the installation.
Installation Isisusing intense beams of neutrons to show where the atoms in the materials and how they move. The machine can reveal details of microscopic structure and processes that can not be seen with other techniques, but are critical to understanding how materials behave complex.
concerning Isis laboratory come weeks after David Cameron made a speech at the Science Museum in London in which he stressed the need to "rebalance the economy" by the highest value of production and engineering.
scientists can use the facilities of Isis for 120 days this year instead of an expected 180. The machine can operate for more than 220 days a year, researchers at the site told the Guardian. Isis receives twice as many applications that can be accommodated, and many scientists have been applied.
"The damage to the base of research in UK universities through a wide range of disciplines is out of all proportion to the cost savings," said Professor Jon Goff, a physicist at the University of London. "The economy is mainly the cost of electricity, and is considered to be the financial value of a research grant to one group at a university," he said.
"For that, you lose a third of the science. Hundreds of experiments have been lost, affecting several research groups in universities ... This greatly affects the international competitiveness of UK research. Very Often these experiences are crucial to the thesis of a student. "
- another principal investigator who requested anonymity, the reputation of Britain was being harmed by the situation. "Nobody outside the UK can understand the decision to invest hundreds of millions of pounds in a center and not use it properly. Many excellent science is not going to do, "he said.
- The neutron source ISIS is home to a community of 2000 scientists at Harwell Science and Innovation Campus near Didcot. Despite its global reputation, Isis has become an easy target for budget cuts because it has a lower profile than the source device of diamonds near the light, which is owned in part by the Wellcome Trust. It was feared that Isis can be completely put on hold. Isis
Figures obtained under Freedom of Information Act by the Campaign for Science and Engineering (Case) has confirmed that Isis is running on only two-thirds of the capacity and run for an extra 60 days per year would cost only £ 3.4 million.
"It's like Manchester United a point from 400 million pounds, which can not play a third time because they can not afford to turn on the lights," said business manager, Imran Khan. "is surprisingly inefficient. Here we have a unique resource that could be the delivery of all progress, new drugs for the storage of clean energy, but it sits dormant for much of years because scientists Don t have the funds to keep the doors open. As a nation, we must invest in discovery and innovation if we want a sustainable economic growth. It is very sad to see us do not maximize our potential, "said.
