Fair play: should gender equality in theatre be mandatory?

all know that equality is a point of contention in the arts. Think of the concerns raised by the lack of roles for older actresses - an issue that was reported by the very late Margaret Tyzack and was raised by everyone from Ian McKellen Gardner own a Lyn's Guardian.
But what about the lack of meat for the roles of women of all ages? The playwright and director Julia Pascal recently complained that women are more likely to play a secretary or a lover star. Pascal, who was the first woman to head the National Theatre, believes it is because most places are run by Grant men "male writers choose to write about the experiences of men." This allows not only to limit the functions available for women, she says, but also discourage some women from the audience of the union.
Whatever you think of the argument, Pascal is at least putting his money where his mouth is, writing plays with strong female protagonists, especially in the political arena. His latest show, Honeypot, which opens later this month in New Diorama Theatre, tells the true story of freedom a "blonde Swedish goddess" who becomes a spy for the Mossad. This is the kind of character not often seen on stage.
