Embryonic stem cell trial of blindness treatment gets green light

British surgeons are participating in the first clinical study of treatment of human embryonic stem cells for regulatory approval in Europe.

Loss of RPE cells usually begins between the ages of 10 and 20 years and leads to the light sensitive rods and cones of the eye dying. Finally, it causes vision loss and even blindness.

If the treatment plant, the RPE cells replacement will grow and eventually restore the retina to a state that can bear the light sensing cells required for vision.
