Egypt, Israel and Palestine: an awkward three-way dance | Khaled Diab

Relations between Israel and Egypt after the revolution are showing irritability - but ordinary people have the key to peace

was a tense relations between Egypt and Israel week. It all started when unknown assailants crossed the Sinai to perform a series of coordinated attacks in southern Israel, killing eight Israelis dead.

Horror

met more terror and terror against, and Israel bombed the Gaza siege, leading to the deaths of at least 14 people, despite the absence of evidence that Gazans were behind d attacks (including some of the perpetrators appear to be the Egyptians), and Islamic militants in Gaza fired their Grad rockets into southern Israel.

in an irresponsible act that could have made the dangerous situation, Israeli troops - in a combat helicopter crossed the border, Egyptian security sources - also killed three of the Egyptian army and the police, apparently by "accident. / Aa>

Fortunately, Egypt has failed to take a leaf from the book of Israel and did not give chase across the border to stop the murderers. On the contrary, wisely decided to follow diplomatic channels and demand an apology and a joint investigation into the incident. A press release announcing the withdrawal of the Egyptian ambassador to Israel later retracted.

Although military tensions seem to have disappeared, an escalating war of words is brewing between Egypt and Israel. In Israel, as well as anger, grief and revenge, accusations are flying that Egypt has "lost control" of Sinai. For its part, Egypt has said that the Israeli security apparatus was quite surprised with their pants down in his inability to protect its borders. There is also a widespread feeling that this is just a taste of things to come after the revolution in Egypt.

Egypt has also fallen prey to anger, pain and revenge called. Protesters besiege have spent days outraged the Israeli embassy - with a history of 21 mounted to replace the flag of Israel and an Egyptian - to require the expulsion of the Israeli ambassador and the severing of ties

What is the future of relations between Egypt and Israel in the light of that dispute, the Egyptian revolution, the extremist government in Israel and Palestine plans to go to the UN next month to get international recognition? Resists cold peace, lead to a new cold war or hot in a big melting?

At this stage it is difficult to know which way the wind blows. My reading of the situation - that I developed at a conference in recent years - is that despite the recent outbreak of the current situation between Egypt and Israel will remain essentially unchanged, although the relationship between Both governments are likely to grow frosties

also anger in the streets and strong anti-Israel positions taken by opposition politicians and ordinary Egyptians, however, there is little interest in Egypt to return to the old days of confrontation. A series of recent surveys, including this one, show that the vast majority of Egyptians are in favor of keeping the peace treaty with Israel.

Even radical critics of Israel, as the popular novelist Alaa al-Aswany, famous refused to let one of his best-sellers translated into Hebrew, called back on the agreement.

Instead, Egypt called for the renegotiation of articles about the presence of Egyptian troops in Sinai. Perhaps al-Aswany be disappointed to learn that senior Israel Defense Forces are, after the attack last week, in full agreement with this suggestion.
