Women's sport 'attracts 0.5% of all sponsorship'

Baroness Grey-Thompson, a report reveals "depressing state of affairs" within one year before the Olympics and said broadcasters and sponsors should do more

There is a "chronic lack of investment" in the sport of women in the UK for sponsors and broadcasters, despite a growing interest of spectators and viewers, according to a new study.

Baroness Grey-Thompson, the most successful Paralympian Britain and President of the Commission on the future of women's sports, the report reveals a "lamentable state of things" less than a year before the London Olympics Games.

The report indicates that there is more interest than ever in such events as the World Cup organized women's football in Germany this year, but the sponsorship of elite women of the sport in United States United was only 0.5% of the total market between January 2010 and August 2011.

This compares to 61.1% for the sport of men in the same period, accounting for mixed sports for the rest of the market.

Sport
women and Fitness Foundation, which had also criticized the lack of media coverage of sport for women and lack of diversity on boards of government agencies, said the lack of interest of sponsors and broadcasters still have a local impact.

"Despite some growth in participation over the last five years, 80% of women and girls - half the population of the United Kingdom - are not the sport or make enough exercise to improve their health, "said CEO Sue Tibballs WSFF." The disease associated with physical inactivity costs taxpayers billions of dollars in the UK each year and it is expected that most women will be obese in 20 years. A nation of more active women, inspired in part by our leading athletes, could make a huge difference in the investment trend. "

Although the report identifies some positive signs in the investment of Investec - The director of the bank and assets - in women's hockey, netball Fiat and several new FA Women's Super League, Grey -Thompson said it was not happening fast enough. "If we make an impact on next year, we will lose this opportunity," he said.
