BBC4 chief: we are not going to be axed

Richard Klein said fans of digital channels, but adds that it is inevitable that they feel the effects of reductions of 20% of the BBC need to do

BBC4 controller Richard Klein, said his chain "will not be fired," but confirmed that its scope is likely to be reduced.

Speaking at the International Television Festival of MediaGuardian Edinburgh on Friday, Klein said that, inevitably, its digital channel feel the effects of reductions of 20% of the BBC is making in all areas due to freeze settlement fee last year.

"BBC4 will not be rejected as far as I am aware. Obviously, it is still under review. It BBC4 face the consequences of the reduction of the BBC at all in our 20% funding? I guess by it. It is inevitable, "he said.

Save BBC4

An online petition, launched earlier this month reported that MediaGuardian.co.uk after the channel is facing cutbacks, attracted over 18,000 signatures in 10 days.

Klein said that the campaign to save BBC4 was "flattering" but insisted: ".. The channel will not be fired will not happen"

But he said it was "difficult to see that the vast majority of savings from cuts in budgets" and said viewers will have noticed a difference in the screen. "People will see a difference, I'm sure. Can not take 20% of the BBC and no. "

said the drama will continue in the channel, but not go into details about its scope. BBC executives are considering reducing BBC4 UK original production of drama and comedy, with the transition to so-called "arts and archives" programming.

Despite BAFTA winning drama that only The Road to Coronation Street and the biopic Enid, some business leaders have questioned whether the site should broadcast programs BBC2.

BBC4 has also commissioned a small number of comedies, like most of it and move on, which attracted rave reviews.

Klein said he did not think BBC4 should be annexed by BBC2 in the way it was 6Music to Radio 2.

He passionately defended the channel, saying: "BBC4 is completely different," adding: ". I do not think there is a call when BBC2 and BBC4 good as well"
