Dominique Strauss-Kahn: The human stain | Editorial

It is important to note that the rush is on the former IMF chief judge now accompanied by a similar against the woman

The accusation of sexual assault against Dominique Strauss-Kahn reads like something from a novel by Philip Roth. And Friday 's Chapter was no exception. After it was reported that the procedure was against him near the brink of collapse, because large hole had opened in the credibility of the maid - the alleged victim of the attack and the chief prosecution witness - Mr. Strauss-Kahn was from house arrest on own acknowledgment, and had released $ 6m in cash bail and bond returns. In six weeks, Mr. Strauss-Kahn is not the global economy 's top bureaucrat and gone hot favorite to become the next French president, humbled by a suspect taken from the "perpetrator walk" the parade of the accused , and back to the people in a sharp suit with a confident smile on his face, his wife at his side.

But this is not fiction, and the case continued with even greater intensity than before, and public relations. It is important that the wild rush to judgment that \ originally tore this man's reputation to pieces before a word of evidence had been tested in court against him, now is not accompanied by a similar rush to verdict against the woman. It is possible, as her attorney Kenneth Thompson continued yesterday outside the courtroom claim that she made false statements in her asylum application and was also the victim of sexual assault in a hotel room, from where he proceeded to give graphic details. The system of criminal justice in America, the lawyers to speak freely outside of the courtroom on the evidence before it is presented before the court allows, contributes little to quiet the study through the media that the case was exposed on both sides of the Atlantic.

This is now set to give more public than is the woman her right to anonymity soon and talk about what she claimed, she has done. Her defense argued that the changes are only lies they told on their account, where they fled after the incident occurred, which is directly on the case. However, if - as widely reported - she had raised a telephone conversation with a man with drug possession in which they discussed the potential benefits of prosecution charges, that alone reasonable doubt, to establish their history, how it could be proved that they could be financial motive for pursuing them.

The resulting case is, as an official said, a mess. It is one which besmirches everyone connected with it. The woman could potentially be charged with lying to a grand jury as well as suffering what she claims happened in the room. The accused, however the case unfolds, has lost his job, his reputation and, in the immediate term at least, a political future.
